Rock Goes To College as bands played live, also Something Else was pretty good

Sound used to be terrible. When I first heard the Sex Pistols, I thought they were rubbish (forget which TV programme showed them).

When I heard them from a single, I did a rapid U turn.

Some of the early Channel 4 stuff was good (when they didn't have enough adverts to fill commercial breaks) - Gas Tank, I think it was, with Rick Wakeman.

I've found a couple of VHS tapes from that era that I will get around to going through soon to see what they contain.

I loved Revolver with Peter Cook.

Old Grey Whistle Test's sound was fucking awful. I think the engineer must have been stoned but that show could suck all the excitement out of a band by making them sound like they were playing under water.

Shame it sounded so dead as there were some amazing acts on it.

The White Room was decent.
Even Later was once very good once, despite the interference of boogie woogie cunt.
The Tube was haphazard. But I loved it.
Even TFI Friday had its "moments"

There's been plenty of good programmes since the Whistle Test... As long as the bands play LIVE.

And, in that regard, TOTP was always shit unless you were 7 years old.

I remember watching a music programme at school called Design Matters with Ultravox on it. It was part of our Art class and the documentary covered, music, videos, album and single covers and stage sets etc. Not sure if other bands did it but it was interesting stuff. Seem to remember there was a kids Top of the Pops called Razzmatazz on ITV I think.

I've always liked Jools Holland's programme. He has a really wide mixture of artists, all playing live, many of whom I've never heard of.

I've bought music I've heard on there, as well as hearing some stuff that I don't get at all. I usually find that those are the most interesting, trying to get what it is that makes some people like them.

As said if there is something you aren’t keen on another artist will be on in 5 mins.
Always something or someone interesting on any show

Re: Music on the tele.
I like a bit of Later with Jools.

Not exactly groundbreaking, but The Chart Show was a better alternative to Top of the Pops. I first heard Epic by Faith No More on there and got into them after that, so it did some good.

Talking of bands playing live.....

Metallica was asked to mime one of their ballads for the MTV music awards

They sang “So What”

This went out live.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jUSnO9rfvKQ

For some reason they haven’t been asked back.
